The DynaMotor™ Integrated Motor/Drive

HVAC Systems

DynaMotors has been awarded a grant by the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a version of the DynaMotor™ for use in residential HVAC systems.

Currently, HVAC systems use low cost, low efficiency, single speed PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) induction motors. These motors are cycled on and off as required by a thermostat. A variable speed motor running continuously at a 1/2 speed uses 1/4 of the power to move the same amount of air. If variable speed motors replaced all 76 million PSC motors running in central HVAC systems in the U.S., a reduction in energy consumption of 46 Billion kWh
(483 x 1012 BTU) annually would occur resulting in savings of $3.8 billion as well as emissions reduction of 23 million metric tons of C02.

Today, variable speed motors are used in only 5% of residential HVAC systems. The reason is cost. Existing technology variable speed motors cost at least 4 times as much as single speed motors. This is a price the HVAC industry and consumers have not been willing to pay. This project will result in the DynaMotor selling at 40-50% less than existing variable speed motors. Experts in the HVAC industry as well as DOE have concluded that at this price level, the variable speed motor will become the norm.
